Are You Ready for Leap Second?
Shanghai, China, December 26, 2016— As you may know, a leap second is a one-second adjustment that is occasionally added to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) in order to synchronize clocks worldwide with the Earth’s ever slowing rotation.
Since this system of correction was implemented in 1972, 26 leap seconds have been adjusted. International Earth Rotation and Reference System Service (IERS) has announced the next leap second will be added on December 31, 2016 at 23:59:60 UTC. The time sequence will be:
How does Leap Second affect GNSS systems?
Though the UTC and other UTC-based time scales will be influenced by the leap second, it will not affect the time scales of GPS, Galileo, BeiDou and QZSS systems that are all based on international Atomic Time. For the GLONASS satellite system, the time scale is based on UTC+3 hours. To use other constellations together with GLONASS, it is important to adjust the current number of leap seconds correctly.
